Bridge-Building between Switzerland and BiH – Zug and its Twin Town Kalesija

There are around 1’000 people from Kalesija, a town located in the north-eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are nowadays living and working in the canton Zug in Switzerland. In 2008, the town twinning agreement between Zug and Kalesija was signed and in 2013, the association “Zug-Kalesija” was founded in order to strengthen the contact and cooperation between these two cities.

According to the former town-clerk Arthur Cantieni, one of the main reason for the town council of Zug to establish a partnership with Kalesija was not just the very difficult economic situation of Kalesija itself, but also the high number of people from this region living and working in the canton Zug.

Since the town twinning in 2008 the cooperation has been very active and diverse and several projects were realised in the sectors of cultural exchange and providing assistance and relief supplies like for example furniture for schools. On 4th June 2010 the intercultural festival “Kalesija tanzt” (engl. Kalesija dances) took place in Zug, where photos of Kalesija were exhibited, dance groups from Zug and Kalesija were performing, culinary specialties from both countries were served and a Bosnian-Herzegovinian film week marked the end of the festival.
