Brčko and Our Diaspora - Voices from Home and Away

We are students from the Youth Media in Jajce program, and here is our story of Brčko and how the diaspora connects with this place we call home.

Brčko - a city at the crossroads

Brčko is more than just a dot on the map. It sits on the banks of rivers, where waters meet and cultures mingle. Walking in its streets, you can hear echoes of many histories - Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav, and more. Today, Brčko stands as a symbol of resilience: a place rebuilding, a city where people believe in connection, not walls.

In Brčko, the community is like a tapestry — diverse threads, different backgrounds, but woven together. You’ll see Bosniaks, Serbs, Croats, everyone side by side. You’ll see local youth gathering in cafés, old men chatting along riverbanks, markets buzzing with voices of all ages. The spirit here feels alive.

The diaspora: memories, bridges, and futures

Many from Brčko have moved abroad — to Europe, to the Americas, to elsewhere in the world. But leaving doesn’t always mean leaving behind. We’ve heard stories: grandparents who still say “Brčko” more than the country name, parents who send home pictures and remittances, aunts and uncles who return for weddings or festivals.

For the diaspora, Brčko is memory and identity. It’s the smell of ćevapi on a Sunday, the sound of a river flowing, the laughter at a local celebration. Sometimes it’s far away, but in hearts it’s near.

Those living abroad become bridges: they share stories of homeland in foreign lands, they bring new ideas, they help fund projects back home, or they simply keep the name of Brčko alive in conversations across continents. For young people back home, those connections feel like a promise — that no one from here is ever truly alone.

Challenges, hopes, and our media lens

Brčko’s challenges are many. Economic opportunities are limited, youth sometimes feel stuck, public infrastructure lags, and social divisions from the past still cast long shadows. The diaspora also faces its own challenges: cultural adjustments, identity conflicts, longing for “home” yet building a life elsewhere.

But hope is strong. Because media like ours give voice to these tensions and dreams. We want to tell stories that are honest, bold, and real. We want youth to see that even if you live abroad, you can contribute — whether through projects, creativity, or sharing skills. We want dialogue between “here” and “there,” between past and future.

From us, to you: an invitation

If you are from Brčko, near or far, we invite you to tell your story. Write to us, send photos, share memories, send your dreams. Because the soul of Brčko lives in many hearts, many places. And through media, through connection, we can build a future that includes everyone — those who stayed and those who went.

We even created a website where you can explore our stories, reflections, and photos — visit The Heart of Sava to see how we captured the spirit of Brčko through our eyes.

Let Brčko’s name travel. Let its stories matter. Let the diaspora and the youth here speak together.
